Questa mattina, domenica, avevo deciso di fare un giro a Sentosa, un’isola a sud di Singapore, famosa per le spiagge e per le sue attrazioni turistiche. L’idea era affittare una bicicletta e pedalare in mezzo ai suoi parchi. Purtroppo non avevo fatto i conti con le condizioni meteo; sempre caldo e umido, ma esattamente quando sono arrivato a Sentosa, ha cominciato a diluviare. La gente in spiaggia continuava comunque a giocare a beach volley, ma l’idea di girare in bici era assolutamente irrealizzabile. Sono quindi tornato verso l’albergo, e ovviametne e’ uscito il sole…
Comunque Sentosa sembra un posto interessante. Ci ritornero’. Nella foto l’imbarazzante leone che vi accoglie al vostro arrivo. E qualche spiaggia “bagnata”.

On Sunday morning I decided to go to Sentosa, an island (connected with a bridge to Singapore) that is very famous because of its beaches and its touristic “orientation”. My plan was to rend a bike and to ride through the island. Unfortunately, at the end of a quite long travel (bus + train + bus) I arrived at Sentosa when it was starting to rain. And it rained a lot, so I was not able to ride the bike. So, I’ll have to come back next weekend.
Sentosa seems to be an interesting place, although the lion you will meet when you will arrive, is a little bit “strange”.

Evidentemente anche a Singapore la domenica le varie comunita’ (cinesi, indiane ecc.) festeggiano. Qui tutto e’ piu’ colorato e allegro che da noi. Se da un lato colpisce l’eleganza e lo sfarzo dei vestiti dei ragazzi e soprattutto delle ragazze indiane, i cinesi danno il meglio di se’ con coreografie decisamente spettacolari…

On Sunday people is quite happy at Singapore too. So you can see many indian guys and, above all, indian ladies extremely elegant with their rich and coloured dresses. But Chinese community is for sure the most “coloured” and “noisy”. In the picture you can see some detail about what was happening close to the train station where I stopped. Not sure about what was the subject of the “party”, but I think it is something related to religion.

Dopo aver aggiornato il blog sfruttando la connessione wireless free offerta dallo Starbucks di fronte all’hotel, ieri sono anche riuscito a skypare con Silvia. Certo, la comunicazione non e’ stata molto intima, anche perche’ c’erano un po’ di bimbi che saltellavano intorno al tavolino piuttosto incuriositi di vedere Silvia sullo schermo, e soprattutto Pongo, uno dei peluches di casa Sacchibelli.

After live blogging, Starbucks offered me the opportunity to live-skyping with Silvia. It has been pretty funny to talk with her and to see her on the screen, while I was drinking my “Americano cafe'”, with many kids jumping around, pretty curious to see Silvia, and moreover Pongo, one on the Sacchibelli’s peluches, on the laptop screen.

If someone is planning to stay at the “Grand Mercure Roxy Hotel” at Singapore, let me suggest you to avoid to pay 18.95 SD per hour for the wifi connection. It is enough to go downstair and to stay at Starbucks. And people working there is quite kind.

Durante il weekend ho cominciato a esplorare Singapore, addentrandomi nel suo cuore commerciale, la city, con ricchi centri commerciali e skyline paragonabili a quelle delle piu’ belle citta’ americane. E la peculiarita’ di Singapore e’ che alterna costruzioni ultra moderne a zone dove la vegetazione e’ straordinariamente ricca.
Mi sposto in autobus o in treno, mezzi comodi, efficienti ed economici. Ovviamente non e’ tutt’oro quel che luccica. Anche qui il traffico e’ congestionato, c’e’ poco spazio per pedoni e bici, ma e’ abbastanza deprimente per un italiano constatare che i servizi offerti nel “belpaese” sono spesso scadenti se confrontati con i paesi vicini e lontani.

Today I visited the center of Singapore, the city, characterized by a beatiful skyline similar to the one of the most famous american cities. I use bus or train to move around. And it is surprising (and at the same time, sad) to note that public transportation here works better than in Italy. It is cheap, efficient and clean….

Dopo una giornata un po’ pesante al lavoro, prima di tornare in albergo ho fatto una sosta al mall qui di fronte. E non ho resistito al richiamo di Starbucks. Cosi’ mentre sorseggio un “cafe’ americano” ho verificato se ci fossero connessioni wireless (quella dell’albergo ha prezzi proibitivi, circa il valore di due azioni Marvell per ogni ora di connessione). E come per magia…
Ecco frisco (il mio laptop con Ubuntu Hardy Heron) prontamente online. Con il primo aggiornamento di blog direttamente da Starbucks….

After a day spent in the office, I stopped at a Starbucks in front of the Hotel before to go to sleep.
I’ve tried a “Caffe’ americano”, together with a chocolate danish. I’ve also checked the availability of some free wifi network (the one at the hotel is too expensive) and I’ve found one offered by SingTel. So, I’ve decided to update the blog, live, directly at Starbucks!!!
P.S. Obviously I did this running Ubuntu Hardy Heron on my beautiful laptop…

Dopo i 3 mesi trascorsi, a fine 2007, nella assolata California, quest’anno, per un periodo piu’ breve (3 settimane), e’ la volta di una visita alla Marvell di Singapore. Sono atterrato da poche ore e non sono ancora in grado di riportare impressioni significative. Di certo il volo, anche se lungo (12 ore) e’ stato piacevole. La tanta decantata qualita’ dei servizi della Singapore Airlines in effetti e’ giustificata. Volo in orario, cibo ottimo, cortesia e serieta’. E viaggiare con delle hostess cosi’, beh, a me non era mai capitato (gli stewart invece erano piu’ convenzionali).

Last year I spent 3 months at Marvell Santa Clara (and it was a nice occasion to meet many friends there around and to spend some vacation time with Silvia at the end of that period); this year I have to visit (for only 3 weeks) Marvell Singapore. Here I don’t know anyone, but, although one half of Sacchibelli had to stay in Italy and I’m here alone, I will do my best to visit some nice place here around to understand how people live here. For now I can only tell you that to fly with Singapore Airlines was a nice experience. The flight was on time, the food was good, and the service pretty kind. And, until today, it never happened to me to fly with hostess so nice and unique (instead stewards were more conventional)
