La vita bucolica

October 15, 2008 // Posted in animals  |  1 Comment

In this period work is not so exciting and,to cheer us up, my colleagues and I, during our lunch hour, enjoy the last warm days exploring the company surroundings. In particular there’s a pool full of animals: carps, geese, terrapins and…nutrias! Here there’s one of them. She really appreciated bread sticks we brought. Is this better than Komodo dragon from Singapore zoo, isn’t it? (Yes, I’m envying Enrico a lot…)

With all these wonderful posts from Singapore those who follow this blog could forget the normal kind of posts from Pavia where there are no zoo, nor Indian temples, nor durian!
Here there’s the new succulent plant of Sacchibelli! It’s a gift of one of our nextdoor neighbour. Ok, it’s not as beautiful as Singapore orchids, but it’s nice…

Durian

October 12, 2008 // Posted in food, Travels  |  1 Comment

Here we go with the Durian, the crazy fruit that local people love a lot, but that has the peculiarity to smell very bad. By the way, it tastes better than it smells, but I sincerely prefer the less exotic strawberries or peaches…

Singapore Zoo

October 12, 2008 // Posted in animals, Travels  |  No Comments

Singapore Zoo is one of the most important local touristic attractions so, on Saturday, I went to visit it. I’m not too much zoo fanatic (I have only seen the “zoo-safari” at Pombia, in Italy, when I was a child), but I have to confess that it was very exciting to see so many animals living close each other, in a very strong and powerful natural vegetations.
It was quite crazy to see also penguins and white bears to live at Singapore, but hopefully they, as humans, had some air conditioning facilities. Giraffes were pretty strange, rhinos surprised me because of their big size, elephants were quite nice (but not as big as expected) and I didn’t realize (until yesterday) that a lot of different monkeys exist around the world.
There was also the option for the night-safari, but I was too tired to wait, so, next time, there is still the possibility for a new experience. Let me strongly suggest to visit the zoo to everyone coming to Singapore.

Strane usanze

Weather and food are the main differences compared to Italy, but lifestyle here at Singapore is not so different from the typical one in West Europe or United States. However there are some peculiarities, some strange details that become evident to a foreign observer. I’ve already noted that construction sites are always working and mainly populated by people from India. But another strange thing is that the builders travel on the back of the trucks to reach the construction sites.

Little India

The majority of the persons here at Singapore are from China, or at least they look like “oriental”; the remaining are from India and the nice thing is that it seems that both people from China and from India live together without problems. For sure, from the economic point of view, Indians are quite poor and they mainly work ad builders in the several construction sites you can find here at Singapore. In the afternoon I visited “Little India” a zone where people from India live following their traditions. And it was exciting to see the millions of colours, the sounds and the perfumes of a so peculiar zone of the world. I probably was the only white Caucasian among hundreds of Indians, but I felt very well and I did a lot of shopping, buying many indian products; they look like very nice, and quite cheap.

Italia a Singapore

It is quite strange, but here at Singapore, until now, I didn’t meet any italian people. Usually italians are everywhere in the world, and it is easy to recognize them because they are quite noisy.
However Italy is always a mythical place where everyone here dreams go. And this morning I met a girl that was a strong supporter of our country…
P.S. I didn’t tell her that I’m from Italy, because I’m quite shy….

Singapore pasta

October 9, 2008 // Posted in food, Travels  |  2 Comments

After the singpore dinner today, at lunch, my colleagues brought me in a famous place to eat what they call “singapore pasta”, but in reality it is noodles.
The lunch was quite good, and the “singapore pasta” with prawns was not so far from the italian pasta. THe only difference is that I had to eat it with chopstick… But I was fast enough 🙂

Cena singaporegna

October 7, 2008 // Posted in food, Travels  |  2 Comments

Tonight three colleagues of mine proposed me a typical “singapore dinner”, and the experience was quite interesting. Singapore and Italy are very far each other, but while this distance is not so evident if you look at the lifestyle in the 2 countries, from the food point of view, the situation is very different. I’m not sure what I ate tonight. Many fish-based things, quite spicy and very strong. So different from typical italian taste, but very nice too. I will ask more details about what I’ve tried. However the kindness of my colleague is very appreciated. And it is nice now to have not only colleagues but also friends in this part of the world.

Once I met the design team here at Singapore, I offered them something coming from Italy (I bought the famous “Baci Perugina” at Malpensa airport). They appreciated a lot.
Today Sofia, a girl of the team, offered me something she bought during a recent travel to Indonesia. I really didn’t understand what I ate, but it was quite strange for italian standards.
However it tasted not so bad, although it smells in a strange way.
