Variazione di spettacolo

A volte si pensa a Cuba come a un paradiso turistico, a volte come a una dittatura crudele. Di certo, da qui, per chi non c’e’ mai stato, e’ dura capire come stiano realmente le cose; di sicuro l’avviso affisso sull’ingresso del teatro Fraschini lascia intuire che non sempre la liberta’ viene prima di tutto.

Sometimes we imagine Cuba as an Earthy paradise, a wonderful place where to spend our vacations. Some other times, we remember that, at the end, it is a place based on dictatorship, and probably not everyone is happy to leave there. Many people try to find their freedom escaping from Cuba. Not clear to understand where it’s the truth. For sure, the message we found at the “Teatro Fraschini” is a little bit unnerving. The message is that the National Ballet of Cuba can’t be in Pavia, as expected, because it has been forced to stay in Cuba to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Revolution…

Pedalando in bicicletta…

In questi giorni di neve e ghiaccio la nostra auto e’ sepolta in garage; impossibile superare la ripida e scivolosa salita… Cosi’ e’ ormai quasi una settimana che ci muoviamo a piedi o in bicicletta. Certo, possiamo permettercelo essendo privilegiati che non necessitano l’auto per andare al lavoro, ma e’ piacevole accorgersi che possiamo sopravvivere anche senza auto.
Per quanto riguarda la bici il discorso e’ completamente diverso. Come forse qualcuno sa, possiedo una bici da corsa comprata a Berkeley, al mitico Missing Link. E’ una Bianchi blu, che adoro (tra gli oggetti che possiedo e’ probabilmente quello cui sono piu’ legato), per i ricordi e perche’ pedalare con la mia Bianchi e’ un piacere di cui credo di non poter fare a meno. Cosi’ anche oggi, nonostante la neve a bordo strada e qualche infida lastra di ghiaccio, approfittando delle ore piu’ calde (la temperatura era intorno agli 0 gradi), mi sono fatto un giro molto suggestivo, verso Bereguardo.


After the snow, we are now experiencing ice problems. Our car is closed in garage and it is not possible to use it because the climb is too much slippery. So we have to wait some warmer day, to eliminate the ice. However it is nice to move around just walking or riding our bicycles. Yes, I know, we are lucky because we don’t need a car to reach our offices, however it is nice to understand that we can survive also without a car.
On the other hands something I can’t live without is the possibility to ride a bycicle; and in particular I love a lot the beautiful Bianchi road bike bought at Missing Link, the most popular bike shop at Berkeley. It probably is the object I love more, and today too, although it was very cold, with the snow still around and although the roads were very slippery, I rode up to Bereguardo, and it was an amazing experience.

Ice

Forse qualcuno può pensare che ci manchi molto il mite clima californiano… Forse qualcuno puo’ pensare che le giornate di sole limpido anche in inverno, il tepore del sole, la brezza proveniente dalla baia, assieme ai riflessi dorati siano nostalgici ricordi. Forse qualcuno può pensare che bardarsi con piumoni, sciarpe, guanti, cuffie, stivali sia un fastidio rispetto all’andare in giro con felpa e infradito…
Ecco, e’ proprio cosi’…..


Maybe someone thinks that we miss a lot californian weather… Maybe someone thinks that the beautiful sunny days also during winter time, the sun always warm, the wind coming from the bay, together with the golden reflections are nostalgic memories. Maybe someone thinks that to wear with heavy coats, scarves, gloves, hats. boots is annoyng compared to go around with sweatshirt and flip flops…

Qui continua a nevicare ininterrottamente da almeno 24 ore… Non siamo lontani dal mezzo metro di neve, e continua a scendere. Qualora avvistiate un pettirosso…

La leggenda del pettirosso

Si narra che quando si vede un pettirosso in città, allora da li’ a poco comincerà a nevicare. Pur non credendo troppo in queste leggende popolari devo ammettere che anche quest’anno il piccolo volatile ci ha azzeccato. Lo abbiamo avvistato due giorni fa che saltellava sul nostro balcone, e stamattina ci siamo svegliati con circa 15cm di neve (e previsioni nevose fino a mercoledi’ sera…).
Che dire, ci gustiamo quest’ultimo giorno di festa avvolti in questo paesaggio magico e immacolato, immaginando l’invidia dei nostri amici californiani sempre immersi in un clima banalmente mite e ripetitivo… E abbiamo colto l’occasione per qualche scatto suggestivo, riuscendo anche a fotografare il pettirosso profeta di questa nevicata…


A popular legend tells that when you see a robin flying within the city, it announces snow. I don’t trust too much on this kind of legends, but two days ago we have seen a robin jiging about and this morning we woke up with at least 6 inches of snow (and forecasts tell that we should have snow until tomorrow night….).
So today, the last day before to start again to work, we enjoy walking around, excited because of the wonderful and impressive scenery we see. Everything is white and, although it is a little bit cold, we believe that our Californian friends are probably annoyed because of the mild weather they are experiencing every day during the year, and they too would like to experience the fun of a day within the snow. A cena da Matteo e Laura

L’anno nuovo e’ arrivato, ma le abitudini dei sacchibelli non cambiano. Cosi’ il primo post del 2009 si riferisce a una cena; piu’ precisamente ieri gli ottimi Matteo (detto il Repox) e Laura ci hanno invitato a casa loro per offrirci una cena ottima e abbondante. Serata piu’ che piacevole, trascorsa allegramente, tra squisite pietanze (da segnalare le ottime tagliatelle ai funghi e la polenta con salamella) e ameni ricordi. Insomma, decisamente un buon modo per inaugurare l’anno nuovo.

At the end the new year arrived but Sacchibelli didn’t change their traditions. So the first post of 2009 is about a nice dinner. In particular yesterday Matteo (the Repox) and Laura invited us at their place and prepared a delicious dinner. It was very nice to talk together and to eat so good food (“polenta with salamella” was amazing and again, I think that our american friends miss a lot this kind of food…). We think that this was a wonderful way to start the new year. Thanks again Matteo and Laura.

One day in Milano

Abitiamo a solo mezz’ora di treno da Milano, eppure ci capita di andarci davvero di rado. Così ieri, approfittando della bella giornata (fredda, ma assolata) siamo partiti in spedizione. Ufficialmente eravamo in vena di acquisti (alcuni libri che a Pavia non abbiamo trovato), ma ne abbiamo approfittato per ammirare anche alcune delle celebri attrazioni milanesi. Non poteva mancare la foto di fronte allo splendido (e di recente ripulito) duomo, e anche la visita alla bellissima chiesa di Sant’Ambrogio era inevitabile.
Abbiamo inoltre colto l’occasione, una volta usciti dalla provinciale Pavia, di respirare un po’ di atmosfera multiculturale e di rimpinguare le scorte di alimenti piu’ o meno orientaleggianti recandoci da Kathay, un interessante e assai fornito negozio specializzato nel genere.


We live very close to Milan, but we don’t visit the city so often as we should do. So, being yesterday a relatively nice day (cold but sunny) we reached Milano by train (it takes less than half one hour) and we spent all the day around. We went to the beautiful Duomo, and then to Sant’Ambrogio church. Milano is quite multicultural (in particular if compared with Pavia) so we enjoyed to share our time within so many turists and people from everywhere in the world. We found also some interesting book in nice bookstores and at the end we went to Kathay, a big store where it is easy to find a lot of foods and objects from the far east (at a reasonable price). We bought many things and quite soon the Belli component of Sacchibelli will cook something special

Visita della Dany

Ieri abbiamo ricevuto una visita molto gradita. La mitica Dany, che l’anno scorso avevamo incontrato in quel di San Diego, è transitata da Pavia durante queste sue brevi vacanze italiane.
E così siamo riusciti ad acciuffarla, anche se per poco tempo.
Non ci si vedeva da un anno ed è stato bello reincontrarsi e aggiornarsi sui vari avvenimenti accaduti e sui propositi per il futuro. Insomma, un incontro più che piacevole, con la promessa di rivederci il più presto possibile, magari nella calda San Diego o nella fredda Pavia, o in qualunque altra parte del mondo dove capiti di incrociarci.

Yesterday our friend Dany came back to Pavia for a short visit during her short vacations within Italy. We met each other one year ago in the sunny California, at San Diego, and the meeting we had yesterday was very nice. We talked a lot about what happened during last year and also about our projects for the future. To meet Daniela is always nice, she is a very true and kind friend, and we hope to meet her again quite soon, maybe again at San Diego, or here in Italy, or in whatever place around the world.

Kenwood o Kitchenaid?

Vista la passione e l’entusiasmo che la compomente Belli mostra per la preparazione di dolci, impasti, pizze, focacce e quant’altro, e visto il gusto con cui la componente Sacchi adora divorarli, i Sacchibelli hanno colto l’occasione del Natale per dotarsi di un robot da cucina. Una volta presa la decisione è venuto però il difficile, ovvero la scelta (gestita dalla componente Sacchi). Pare che il mercato dei robot da cucina sia dominato da Kitchenaid, negli States e da Kenwood in Europa. Dopo attenta analisi e comparazione di prestazioni e prezzi dell’Artisan di Kitchenaid e del KM010 di Kenwood, ascoltati i consigli e i suggerimenti di felici possessori sia del Kitchenaid (Emiko and Ale, Billa and Anna) che del Kenwood, la scelta è caduta sul Kenwood (in Italia, per qualche insensata politica commerciale, il Kitchenaid viene venduto a prezzi improponibili…).
Il Kenwood è più potente, il Kitchenaid è sicuramente più cool, ma alla fine la mia opinione è che le macchine siano abbastanza equivalenti.
Ad ogni modo il nostro KM010 ha già esordito a Santo Stefano impastando magistralmente (con la frusta K) l’impasto per la preparazione di ottime margheritine di Stresa.

As you know the Belli component of Sacchibelli loves to cook and to prepare any kind of cakes, pizzas, focaccias and so on. On the other hand, the Sacchi component love to eat them…
So, for Christmas we decided to buy a food processor, but the choice was not that easy. It seems that there are 2 brands that dominate the food processors market, Kitchenaid, within USA and Kenwood witìhin Europe. We compared the trade offs between the Artisan from Kitchenaid and the KM010 from Kenwood and we asked also people that own the first one or the second one. At the end we concluded that the two food processors are quite similar; Kenwood is more powerfull, while Kitchenaid is for sure a “cool” object. However, for some strange commercial reason, Kitchenaid in Italy is sold at very high prices (compared to other European countries and USA) and at the end we choose the KM010 from Kenwood.
The day after Christmas we used it to prepare the mixture for the famous cookies called “margheritine di stresa”, and the result was quite exciting.

Christmas appetizers

Dopo il Natale “piccioncini like” dell’anno scorso, nell’assolata baia di San Francisco, quest’anno il giorno di Natale si presenta piu’ tradizionale, con il freddo e la nebbia pavese a fare da contorno.
Alla roulette del classico pranzo dai parenti (andremo da Marco, Francesca Ilarietta e Michelino) i Sacchibelli hanno vinto la preparazione degli antipasti. E la componente Belli di Sacchibelli ha dato fondo alla fantasia e al suo estro culinario preparando una notevole quantita’ di tortine variamente ripiene, croissant salati, tartufini di caprino, involtini allo speck e tartine al salmone.
Nelle foto qualche dettaglio e una visione globale. Considerando che questi sono solo gli antipasti, il pranzo si prospetta impegnativo…


While last year we enjoyed a “piccioncini-like” Christmas in the beautiful and sunny Bay area, this year Christmas day seems to be more “standard”. We will stay here, within the cold fog typical of Pavia during winter time, and we will have a lunch at my brother’s place, together with a bunch of parents. Little Ilaria and little Michele for sure will contribute to give us energy, happyness and a little bit of chaos too. To help in the lunch preparation the Belli component of Sacchibelli (with the help of the Sacchi component too) prepared a lot of nice and very interesting appetizers: a bunch of mini pies (someone filled with mushrooms, while others with tuna or salmon cream), salted croissants, goat cheese truffles, speck roulade (I think that our Italian friends within USA will miss speck a lot….) and salmon canapes.
Considering that these are only the appetizers, I think that the lunch will be quite challenging…
