Ormai siamo prossimi alla Pasqua, e con questa scusa ci sentiamo autorizzati a mangiare ancora piu’ cioccolato.
Tra i tanti dolci che abbondano da Sacchibelli, particolarmente interessante e’ quest’uovo di Pasqua… E’ confezionato in modo particolare e, in effetti, se messo in orizzontale, puo’ ricordare un simpatico maialetto.

Easter time is coming soon, and this is another good reason to eat a lot of chocolate eggs (I know, in Usa they are not so popular, but now we are back to Italy…). In this period we are eating a low of sweet things. But this chocolate egg has a strange shape. In fact, it looks like a small pig…

Il freddo inverno sembra ormai alle spalle, e le giornate cominciano a scaldarsi anche qui a Pavia. Inoltre qualche fiore è comparso nel nostro appartamento, segno che la primavera è ormai alle porte. E questo ci rende particolarmente felici.

Weather is getting better and better here in Pavia too, and not only in California. Moreover some flowers appeared in our apartments. Spring time is coming, and this makes us happy.

Domenica scorsa la colazione è stata particolarmente abbondante. Oltre al classico yogurt, caffe latte con biscotti e spremuta, per una congiuntura particolarmente favorevole hanno trovato posto sulla tavola sia l’ottima cassata della signora Beatrice (di cui al post precedente) che i buonissimi bagels preparati da Silvia. Si respirava aria di Sicilia per la cassata e la spremuta, e aria New Yorkese per i bagels.
A pranzo invece siamo passati al menù giapponese, con un delicato “chicken with soy and balsamic dressing” accompagnato da insalata di daykon e carote, oltre all’immancabile riso coi piselli. Il tutto gustato facendo uso dei terribili chopstick.

Last sunday breakfast was particularly huge. As usual we had yogurt, caffelatte with cookies and orange juice. But there was room also both for “cassata” (from Beatrice) and bagels (from Silvia). This kind of mixture between sicily and new yourk was great.
At lunch, we switched to japanese, with “chicken with soy and balsamic dressing”, together with rice and beans and a salad with daykon and carrots. I think Emiko should appreciate this.

Benche’ siamo ancora a inizio febbraio, oggi anche a Pavia si respirava aria di primavera.
Una bella giornata di sole, il cielo sereno e blu, e i primi fiori che cominciano a colorare un po’ l’ambiente. E poi, oltre ai fiori veri (nella foto le nostre primule), grazie a Silvia a volte fioriscono fiori non solo belli, ma anche buoni. Cosi’ stamattina sono “fioriti” in cucina le “margheritine” di Stresa…

Although we are always in winter time, today it was a sunny day here in Pavia, and we realized that spring-time is not that far. You can see, in the picture, our primroses. And tulips are coming soon. Waiting for tulips, this morning some nice “margheritine” di Stresa cookies appeared in the kitchen… Thanks Silvia.

Yes we can!

Come gia’ detto il buon cibo e’ una delle peculiarita’ che rendono piacevole la permanenza qui in Italia. Cosi’ questo weekend, il sabato, nel centro di Pavia si e’ materializzato un interessante mercatino di prodotti tipici delle varie regioni italiane. Nella foto lo stand dell’umbria (salumi e formaggi eccezionali) e quello della Sicilia (dai dolci incredibili).
Ma c’erano anche il caciocavallo e i taralli pugliesi, il tonno di Favignana, il limoncello di Amalfi e tante altre bonta’.
La domenica invece, pranzo in agriturismo coi compagni di liceo. Ed ecco il primo piano degli affettati….

As already explained, one of the reasons why it is nice to be back here in Italy is good food. So, last saturday there was a little regional market in the center of Pavia, with a lot of wonderful stand. In the picture you can see food from Umbria and Sicily, but I guarantee that there were also stands from Puglia (taralli and caciocavallo), Favignana (tuna and bottarga), AMalfi (Limoncello) and many other things.
On sunday I had lunch at a nice agriturismo (Cascina Caremma) not far from Pavia. Everything was great, but in particular I was crazy for this dish of “affettati”.

Tuttavia, benchè il clima sia decisamente peggiore, freddo e umido, ci sono alcuni interessanti side-benefit di cui ho sentito molto la mancanza nei tre mesi californiani. Il principale è ovviamente la presenza di Silvia (forse non è elegante definirla side-benefit), ma non trascurabile è pure l’abbondanza di salame crudo. Immagino che la comunità italiana californiana (Billa e Anna, Ale e Emiko, Mattia, Raffaele, Gianfranco e Anna, Beppe e Sara, Brando e Silvia, Andrea e Rossella, Daniela, Matteo e Valentina) guardi alla foto con un po’ di invidia…

Obviously, there is some side benefit here. The most important one is Silvia (that probably can’t be defined only as a side benefite) but also “salame crudo” is a very nice thing I missed a lot during my californian period. I think that the italian community that I met during my period (Billa and Anna, Ale and Emiko, Mattia, Raffaele, Gianfranco and Anna, Beppe and Sara, Brando and Silvia, Andrea and Rossella, Daniela, Matteo and Valentina) looks covetously to the picture…

Alla fine, nonostante la nebbia di Londra e i ristretti tempi delle coincidenze, Silvia e’ arrivata in California.
Ed eccoci immortalati in una “romantica” colazione di Natale, ovviamente a base di bagels.

At the end, although some trouble with fog in London and flight connections, Silvia landed in California.
And today we had a “romantic” breakfast, obviously with bagels.

Mentre in Italia attraversare la strada e’ sempre un incubo, sia che ci sia il semaforo o le striscie pedonali, qui, almeno da quel punto di vista, sono molto piu’ civili. In particolare i bambini vengono tutelati. Cosi’ la mattina di fronte alle scuole dei volontari (non so se siano retribuiti), muniti di cartello di stop, scortano i bimbi al passaggio pedonale.
Beninteso, qui tutti si fermano in prossimita’ delle striscie, per cui forse e’ uno scrupolo eccessivo. Pero’ e’ bello vedere tutto questo. Un po’ come il vigile di quartiere da noi, ma forse qui tutto sembra funzionare meglio.

While in Italy to cross the strett, for a pedestrian, is always a nightmare, here, at least from that point of view, eveything is very easy. Cars stop when pedestrians cross. Moreover, children are protected when they go to school, and some volunteers with “stop” sign help them while crossing.

La settimana scorsa a Redding ho provato (da fermo) il chopper. E oggi, uscendo di casa, ecco un altro motociclista con una moto spaziale. Non so se sia un chapper o se venga classificato in qualche modo diverso. Di sicuro in Italia sono insolite.

Last week I tried the chopper of Jared’s father. And this morning I took this picture. I don’t know if this bike too can be classified as a chopper, however it is very impressive. And unusual for Italy.
