Bici nuova…

Ecco la nuova bici

Era l’agosto del 2009 quando avevo recuperato (vedi qui) da un cassonetto una bici abbandonata, ma in discrete condizioni. Dopo una piccola risistemata, mi ha accompagnato fino a pochi giorni fa per le strade di Pavia, nell’uso quotidiano. Mi ci sono affezionato parecchio, anche perche’ non mi ha mai tradito. E alla fine ho pedalato per piu’ di 10000 km (vedi qui). Ma, avendo da poco “ereditato” da un caro zio che purtroppo se ne e’ andato una bici innegabilmente piu’ bella, e’ giunta l’ora del passaggio di consegne. E da qualche giorno potete vedermi scorrazzare per Pavia con questa bella bici azzurra, un po’ piu’ appariscente ma, si spera, sempre di scarso interesse per i signori ladri.

So now you can see me with this really nice light blue bike, better than the previous one, but hopefully not so good to be stolen.

Linux Mint 15 su sony VPCSB1V9E

Come forse sapete, qui dai sacchibelli Linux e’ il sistema operativo prediletto. Abbiamo sperimentato varie distribuzioni, e in questa fase, sia sul portatile di Silvia che di Enrico gira una recente Linux Mint 15 (Olivia), Cinnamon Edition. Sul Toshiba U305 di Enrico tutto funziona perfettamente, mentre sul Sony Vaio VPCSB1V9E di Silvia c’era la complicazione della doppia scheda grafica (una Intel integrata HD300 e una piu’ performante ATI Radeon HD6470). Da Windows, tramite interruttore (fisico) e’ possibile cambiare la scheda video usata (Intel quando si predilige risparmiare batteria, ATI quando sono richieste performance piu’ elevate); in Linux questo switch non funziona e al piu’ e’ possibile disabilitare la scheda video integrata ATI. C’e’ un comando del kernel VGASWITCHEROO che dovrebbe permettere questo, ma non siamo riusciti a configurarlo a dovere. Pero’ i piu’ recenti driver proprietari ATI Catalyst (versione 13.4 nel nostro caso) sembrano offrire questa possibilita’ di switch (software) almeno per i sistemi muxless (come il Vaio VPCSB1V9E sembra essere). Ecco la procedura, trovata su internet e per la quale ringraziamo di cuore chi l’ha sviluppata.

Let’s install all the required packages

  • sudo apt-get install build-essential cdbs fakeroot dh-make debhelper debconf libstdc++6
  • sudo apt-get install dkms libqtgui4 wget execstack libelfg0 dh-modaliases
  • sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic xserver-xorg-core libgcc1

Being VPCSB1V9E a 64bits system, the following steps are also required:

  • sudo apt-get install ia32-libs lib32gcc1 libc6-i386
  • cd /usr ; sudo ln -svT lib /usr/lib64

The following deb packages have to be downloaded from the links

  • http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu//pool/main/u/udev/libudev0_175-0ubuntu13_amd64.deb
  • https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B0tTaH4qTIIXdDF3NThFWUtrYlU/edit?usp=sharing

Next step consists in the removal of old intel and fglrx drivers

  • sudo apt-get remove fglrx*
  • sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-intel

and the installation of previously downloaded deb files

  • sudo dpkg -i libudev*
  • sudo dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.21.6-0ubuntu4_amd64.deb

The xserver driver have to be prevented from any upgrade with the following command

  • sudo apt-mark hold xserver-xorg-video-intel

Eventually we are ready for the installation of the ATI Catalysts driver (13.4); we have to download the zip file from the official website: www.amd.com/drivers, and then run the executable to build a deb package and to install it

  • sudo sh ./amd-catalyst-XX.X-linux-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/raring
  • sudo dpkg -i fglrx*.deb

There are at the end few post-installation steps to be executed:

  • sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup (if present)
  • sudo aticonfig --initial -f

Then, to switch to the discrete (ATI HD6470) gpu, you need to execute the following command

  • sudo aticonfig --px-dgpu

and then reboot the computer. Once started it again, it should use the ATI gpu. To switch back to the integrated one (INTEL HD3000), run the following command

  • sudo aticonfig --px-igpu

and reboot again

Piscina

Lorenzo sguazza

Dopo il corso di nuoto invernale e primaverile, questi giorni agostani trascorsi a Pavia non potevano non farci riprovare l’ebrezza della piscina. Cosi’ oggi pomeriggio abbiamo portato Lorenzo alla piscina Campus Acquae e, come previsto, si e’ divertito un sacco. Particolarmente affascinante e’ stato il fungo d’acqua, ma diciamo che ha dimostrato un certo entusiasmo per tutto l’impianto. Mi sa che ci ritorneremo…

August in Pavia is not that exciting, because of weather and mosquitos. However today it was a nice sunny day and, in the afternoon, we decided to go to Campus Acquae swimming pool. For Lorenzo it was the first time in an open swimming pool, and it was really excited. I think we will come back before the summer will end

Dalla Francia agli States, passando per Pavia

Anna, Marco, Matteo, Silvia, Enrico e Lorenzo

Succede che, con poco preavviso, i nostri amici Marco e Anna, col piccolo Matteo, hanno dovuto trasferirsi da Grenoble, dove eravamo andati a trovarli poche settimane fa (vedi qui), negli States, a Santa Clara. E per farlo, hanno deciso di transitare per Pavia. Cosi’ stasera abbiamo organizzato una pizza + gelato qui dai Sacchibelli, per godere ancora un po’ della loro compagnia, per gustarci il “grande” Matteo che gioca col “piccolo” Lorenzo, e per scambiarci un po’ di sane chiacchiere. Risultato, serata stupenda, davvero piacevole, come sempre accade quando ci vediamo con loro. Grazie, e in bocca al lupo per la vostra nuova avventura. A presto!!!

We met them in Grenoble roughly two months ago (see here), and in a while, they are ready to fly to California, for a new job and life experience. Marco, Anna and Matteo travel a lot, but for sure they are true friends to us. And we enjoyed the dinner tonitght, with a simple pizza and an home made “gelato”, but also with their warm friendship. Thanks for coming, and see you soon, probably in USA.

Qualche giorno a Schilpario

Eccoci con tutti i nonni al seguito

Non e’ stato facile incastrare, in questa assolata estate pavese, qualche giorno di vacanza. Un po’ di colplicazioni ci hanno impedito di pianificare le vacanze come previsto, ma pur di goderci qualche giorno di fresco, siamo riusciti a ripiegare sfuggendo dall’afa inerpicandoci su per le montagne bergamasche. Abbiamo cosi’ trascorso qualche giorno in quel di Schilpario, circondati dall’affetto di tutti i nonni, e trascinati dall’incontenibile gioia che ci trasmette il piccolo Lorenzo. Cosi’ ecco qualche scatto, per ricordare questi giorni belli e per molti aspetti davvero speciali e intensi.

This summer we were not able to organize the vacations as expected because there was some trouble we had to face on. However, to escape from the hot Pavia, at the end we were able to stay few days at Schilpario, a little village on the Alpes. It was high enough to be breezy, at least during the night, and we enjoyed the presence of all the grandparents. Here you can see few pictures, to remember a vacation that, for many reasons, was really speacial.
