Sacchibelli endorses Barack Obama

October 26, 2008 // Posted in Uncategorized  |  1 Comment

The election of next USA president is close; this election is very important not only for USA people, but for everyone around the world; moreover, being the political situation within Italy very sad since many years, Sacchibelli too is watching with interest at american politics. And we decided to endorse Barack Obama. For sure our endorsement is only symbolic and not as important as the one from Colin Powell, or the ones from many artists (last, but not least, James Taylor) and newpapers, however Barack Obama, young but very charismatic democratic candidate, is able to arouse enthusiasm in politics and to give us hope and optimism, two things the world really need in this period.
Although we really know that, if elected, the american politics and situation will not suddenly change, as highlighted by Christian Rocca, to see a young, black candidate to the presidency of United States of America less than 50 years after the famous Martin Luther King speech ‘I have a dream’ is at least a message of hope and the signal that the “race problem”, at least within the USA, has been resolved. And this is again a lesson we should learn as soon as possible here within Italy.

Montessori

I usually read italian online newspapers, hoping to find some good news (this doesn’t happen so often…); and while I was walking through Arab street, in the arab district of Singapore, it was quite strange to me to read that here too, the “metodo Montessori” is still followed, while in Italy we are seeing the umpteenth school reformation, with usual fights among politicians, professors, labor unions and students. This makes me a little bit sad about our involution…

Un po’ d’Italia a Singapore

October 18, 2008 // Posted in Travels  |  3 Comments

Come gia’ detto, qui a Singapore e’ veramente difficile incontrare italiani. E non c’e’ neanche “Little Italy”.

As I’ve already written, here it is not easy to meet Italian people. But Italy still remains very famous and popular among oriental people, and almost everyone dreams to visit it. Obviously Ferrari is probably the most appreciated example of “made in Italy”, but also the wonderful Vespa you see in the picture is very appreciated. Unfortunately almost everyone knows about the problems of Italy too. Mafia for example, and also the recent problems about Naples and Alitalia. And when they ask me something about mafia, I’m not so happy to explain them that the reality is not so different from what they watch at the TV. And when I see something like the sign shown in the last picture, I’m not so proud to be italian…

Quartiere arabo

After the Chinese district, with its folklore, the colors and sents of “Little India”, today, during my last weekend in Singapore, I went to the Arab district. Here in Singapore many different cultures coexist close each other, apparently without any problem and with the maximum respect. This is a very exciting aspect of life here, while it is very disappointing to feel the fear and the distrust against the “different” as it happens in Italy and in other countries around the world.
To walk through the allays of the arab district, between mosques and hand-woven stores was a very exciting experience.

During the week I always eat at Marvell cafeteria, and food is usually “oriental style”; so, during the weekend I try to avoid oriental food, but always trying something new. So, I didn’t resist to the “filet” made in a restaurant from New Zeland. I love filet (obviously rare), and I never tried before anything from New Zeland (that is quite far from Italy, by the way).
As you can see, I really enjoyed this kind of meat…

Durian (2)

Few days ago I posted the first picture about Durian; however last week, thanks to a Sang Kong’s suggestion, we knew where to go to find the best Durians of Singapore. It is a street in the Geylang district where many greengrocers, close each others, sell a lot of fruits, and in particular Durian. Obviously the atmosphere smells a lot here around, but it is very suggestive to stop at some table and to eat fresh durians. So, together with Martin, we tried this “very Singaporean” experience (picture coming soon).

Pranzo cinese

This week also Martin, our project leader, came to Singapore from Santa Clara. The deadline of the project is approaching, and we are a little bit busy in these last days. However Sang Kong, the responsible of Singapore site, invited us for a special lunch at a famous Chinese restaurant at Topayo, a nice Singapore district. Food was very good, but it was particularly nice to have fun with some colleagues, and to forget (for few hours) the problems related to our circuits.

In this period work is not so exciting and,to cheer us up, my colleagues and I, during our lunch hour, enjoy the last warm days exploring the company surroundings. In particular there’s a pool full of animals: carps, geese, terrapins and…nutrias! Here there’s one of them. She really appreciated bread sticks we brought. Is this better than Komodo dragon from Singapore zoo, isn’t it? (Yes, I’m envying Enrico a lot…)

With all these wonderful posts from Singapore those who follow this blog could forget the normal kind of posts from Pavia where there are no zoo, nor Indian temples, nor durian!
Here there’s the new succulent plant of Sacchibelli! It’s a gift of one of our nextdoor neighbour. Ok, it’s not as beautiful as Singapore orchids, but it’s nice…

Durian

Here we go with the Durian, the crazy fruit that local people love a lot, but that has the peculiarity to smell very bad. By the way, it tastes better than it smells, but I sincerely prefer the less exotic strawberries or peaches…
