E’ incredibile come, in pochi km2 siano racchiuse le piu’ grandi societa’ tecnologiche, informatiche e microelettroniche.
For who is asking why this zone is called Silicon Valley. It is incredible to see how crowded is this area with technical, microelectronics and computers companies.
E’ passato da poco Halloween, Thanksgiving sara’ questa settimana (poveri tacchini….), eppure le prime “discrete” decorazioni natalizie gia’ appaiono nelle viette di Santa Clara.
Halloween is past since few weeks, Thanksgiving still didn’t arrive, however the first “inconspicuous” Christmas decorations appear here at Santa Clara
Come tradizione, anche questo sabato ho cenato assieme a cari amici.
L’occasione e’ stata il passaggio del mitico Colin da queste parti per poche ore (viaggiava da Milano a New York, ma e’ riuscito ad inserire uno scalo di qualche ora a San Francisco…).
Cosi’ mi sono recato a Milbraee, vicino all’aeroporto, e li’ ho incontrato Colin e i suoi fantastici genitori.
La serata e’ stata ottima, il cibo sublime (abbiamo mangiato all'”Hong Kong Flower Lounge“) e la compagnia piacevolissima.
E questa volta mi sono ricordato di scattare una foto ricordo. Ecco Kuniko, Hung-Hsi, Colin e il sottoscritto.
Grazie ancora per la bellissima serata e per avermi fatto sentire parte della vostra famiglia.
As usual, this saturday too I had dinner together with friends. My friend Colin, travelling from Italy decided to stop few hours in San Francisco… So it was possible to meet him, together with his wonderful family. Hung-Hsi and Kuniko (Colin’s dad and mom, respectively) made a reservation at Hong Kong Flower Lounge, and we met each other (with Colin too) in this very nice restaurant (it is at Milbraee, not far from SFO, the San Francisco Airport).
We had great food and we spent a very nice evening talking about many things. It seemed to me to be part of their family, and I always have to thank them for their kindness.

La California ha parecchie attrattive. Di sicuro il clima, anche qui a nord, e’ una di queste.
Mentre Pavia sperimenta le sue prime gelate, ecco che io me ne vado in giro in pantaloncini e maglietta. E anche la vegetazione qui non da’ molto l’idea che l’inverno sia alle porte.

California is a very attractive region. Its weather is one of the most interesting characteristics. While in Pavia temperature is going down under 0 degrees (Celsius), here I usually ride my bicycle in t-shirt and shorts. Unfortunately I don’t have a picture that show this, but for sure you can appreciate the beatifull sun. And vegetation too seems to be closer to summer than winter.

Qui non posso purtroppo competere con Silvia a livello di dolci. Cosi’ mi limito a cucinare qualche primo o qualche secondo, su ricette che peraltro mi manda l’ottima Silvia.
Cosi’, in previsione di invitare i miei amici a pranzo o cena qui, oggi ho provato a cucinare cous cous con verdure e pollo. L’ho sperimentato prima su me stesso, perche’ mi spiacerebbe avvelenare amici tanto cari.
Ma devo dire che sono soddisfatto. Non so se la foto rende giustizia, ma il tutto era molto buono.
Here I cannot cook any cake or something of similar, because I don’t have the right tools. So, while Silvia is doing wonderful “baci di dama”, I try to cook some main course following the “skype” suggestions from Silvia.
So today I tried “cous cous” with chicken and vegetables. I would offer it to my friends here around, but I don’t want to poison them. So today it was just a “training” excercise. However I’m pretty happy about the result. I don’t know if you can appreciate it from the picture.
Il vento di qualche giorno fa ha spazzato via tutte le foglie dei tigli di viale Campari e i rametti scheletrici non migliorano molto il mio umore che in questi giorni è pessimo. Per fortuna qualche albero ancora resiste e mi rallegra insieme ai baci di dama che mi sono preparata oggi.
Some days ago a cold wind swept away all the leaves of viale Campari linden trees and the skeletal branches are not so good in improving the bad mood I’m in. Fortunately some trees still resist to the coming winter and cheer me up together with the chocolate cookies I’ve prepared this morning.
Dopo il panettone finto maina, ecco i pandori originali Balocco, di cui il buon Marco ha fatto incetta….
Anche se dalla foto sembra che ci siano 10 pandori e 2 panettoni, in realta’ la foto e’ doppia, e i pandori/panettoni che ci sono con me sono gli stessi che ci sono con Marco. Quindi solo 5 pandori e un panettone. Saranno sufficienti?
After the “almost” Maina “Panettoni” of last October the 21st, here there are the original “Pandoro Balocco” that Marco found in a “World Market” around here.
ALthough it seems that we have 10 “pandori” and 2 “panettoni” (here called big muffin), in reality the picture is a composite one, and the “pandori” and “panettone” you see with me are the same that appear with Marco. So, at the end, we have only 5 “pandori” and 1 “panettone”. Will they be enough?
Oggi sono andato a Stanford per cenare assieme ad Ale ed Emiko. E’ stata davvero una bella serata e devo ringraziare davvero tanto Ale ed Emiko (come Anna e Marco, del resto) perche’ dedicano davvero molto tempo a me. Aspettando Silvia (arrivera’, come un regalo di Natale, alla vigilia), praticamente mi considerano parte delle loro rispettive famiglie. E la sensazione e’ davvero piacevole.
Andando a Stanford, ho colto l’occasione per visitare il bellissimo “Stanford Book Store”, un posto dove si possono trovare parecchi libri molto interessanti e dove ci sono confortevoli poltrone dove sedersi e leggere comodamente i libri di interesse.
Il campus di Stanford e’ davvero bello. Cosi’ ho scattato una foto al famoso campanile (per la verita’, c’e’ un altro campanile, ancora piu’ famoso, in un’universita’ qui vicino). Sfortunatamente stava piovendo, e ho dovuto aprire l’ombrello. A proposito, date un’occhiata all’ombrello…
Today I went to Stanford to have dinner with Ale and Emiko. It was a really nice evening, and I really have to thank a lot them (and Anna and Marco too) because they spend a lot of time with me. Waiting for Silvia (she will arrive as a Christmas gift next December the 24th), they are considering me as part of their family, respectively, and this is really a nice sensation to me.
Going to Stanford, I decided to spend some time at the beautiful Stanford Book Store, a lovely place where you can find a lot of interesting books; moreover there are very comfortable armchairs where you can seat and read whatever you desire before to buy it (and in theory you can read without buying….).
Stanford Campus is quite nice, and I took a picture of the famous campanile (by the way, there is another campanile, more famous, obviously, around here…..). Unfortunately it was raining and I had to open the umbrella. Please, give a look at the umbrella 🙂
Dopo un mese di Stati Uniti e’ possibile fare un primo bilancio. Direi che e’ positivo, anche se vivere in un posto dove non esiste il “vero” salame, e in generale, gli affettati, depone certo a suo sfavore.
Per fortuna invece e’ possibile trovare gli ottimi formaggi europei, sia francesi che italiani. Nella foto e’ ad esempio ritratta una modica quantita’ di parmigiano reggiano (per uso esclusivamente personale…).
La carne bovina invece e’ ottima, cosi’ a volte mi esibisco in ottime bistecche (rigorosamente al sangue, come nella foto).
Inoltre la cucina Marvell e’ decisamente di alto livello, e posso contare su molti amici nei dintorni, come Marco e Anna, Ale ed Emiko (magnamotto), Enrico ed Elisa (magnafiume), Colin e famiglia a Berkeley, con i quali capita spesso di cenare insieme, con ottimi cibi.
In conclusione, penso di riuscire a sopravvivere anche per i prossimi due mesi.
After one month I think it is possible to make a first evaluation of how things are doing from the food point of view.
In general the situation is very good, although the lack of “original” salame and “affettati” makes me really sad.
Hopefully, from the cheese point of view, it is easy enough to find very good european cheeses (mainly italian and french) like “brie”, “mozzarella di bufala” and the lovely “parmigiano reggiano” (see picture). And meat too is superb, so sometime I try to cook a very good steak (rigorously rare), as you can see in the picture.
Moreover I usually have lunch and dinner at Marvell, where food is very good. And I have also a lot of friends here around, like Marco and Anna, Ale and Emiko (Magnamotto), Elisa and Enrico (Magnafiume), Colin and family. Sometime they invite me and I eat really good food. Thanks to all for helping me to survive!!!
Halloween e’ passato, ma in mensa in Marvell e’ rimasta questa impressionante zucca gigante. Sembro quasi magro, al confronto.
Halloween is gone, but in the Marvell cafeteria still there is this giant pumpkin!!!! It seems that I am thin if compared to it.
